Armadale Residence is a Federation-era home in Melbourne’s inner suburbs. The brief for the project was to expand the home’s footprint and design a beautiful, functional and timeless home that aligned more holistically with the values of its owners and how they want to live and occupy the space.

A desire to retreat and a love of entertaining informed much of the design approach which set out to retain the integrity of the original home while embracing the owner’s affection for volume and aesthetic impact. This meant departing from the building’s original scale and creating a lofty extension imbued with modern-day functionalities.

The existing period spaces were reimagined to embrace a sense of openness and volume in dialogue with the contemporary extension. Through a focus on light and mechanisms to open and encourage light inward, a common theme emerges that offers a place of sanctuary.
