The Cater House

The Cater House, originally designed by Russell Jack of John Allen and Russell C. Jack Architects, is regarded as an excellent example of the late twentieth century Sydney regional style. Located in the Canberra suburb of Red Hill, the house was awarded the 1965 Meritorious Architecture Award by the ACT chapter of Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) and its lasting merit was acknowledged in 2001 with the Institutes’ 25 Year Award.
The studio was engaged to thoughtfully consider the kitchen’s relationship with the rest of the house: although visible, it lacked the physical connection that has become increasingly important to modern family life, as well as update bathrooms as the first phase of a greater restoration and additions project. Particular attention was given to quality of craftsmanship with beautifully book-matched timber veneer joinery, solid timber details and bespoke ribbed surfaces.
